Broadway in Richmond

The delights of the Broadway stage can be found just minutes from Richmond homes for sale at the historic Altria Theater, located on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. Our real estate agents eagerly anticipate these upcoming productions that include dramas, comedies, and musicals.

  • Anastasia
Anastasia sweeps viewers away to the exotic locales of the one-time Russian Empire and Paris of the 1920s. A young woman known as Anya races to escape the clutches of a Soviet officer while on a quest to uncover her mysterious past. Along the way, she joins forces with a whip-smart conman and a charming former aristocrat. Written by Terrence McNally, award-winning playwright of Master Class and Ragtime, Anastasia runs October 26-31, 2021.

  • Come from Away
Out of the tragic events of 9/11 came this triumphant story that forms the basis of Come from Away. When 7,000 airline passengers found themselves stranded in a small town in Newfoundland, residents opened their homes and hearts to the total strangers. This unlikely scenario ultimately forged strong friendships that continue to this day. Come from Away runs February 1-6, 2022.

  • The Lion King
The cinematic phenomenon gains a new dimension on the stage in The Lion King. As an animated feature, the story of lion prince Simba and his journey to fulfill his destiny captured the imaginations of kids and adults around the world. The stage production features the same blend of drama and whimsy, as live actors perform the iconic songs composed by Elton John and Tim Rice. The Lion King runs March 9-20, 2022.

  • My Fair Lady
George Bernard Shaw's classic play Pygmalion inspired My Fair Lady, a much-beloved show that's been called "the most perfect musical of all time." Across the decades, audiences have been caught up in the endearing odd-couple relationship of plucky Eliza Doolittle and pompous Henry Higgins. As you leave the theater, you'll find yourself humming timeless tunes such as "The Rain in Spain" and "Get Me to the Church on Time." My Fair Lady runs May 31-June 5, 2022.

  • Mean Girls
Tina Fey focuses her razor-sharp wit on the relatable topic of high school cliques in Mean Girls. Returning to the United States after a childhood spent in Africa, Cady Heron must learn to navigate a different kind of wildlife found in a Midwestern high school. Can Cady bring down the ironically-named Plastics without falling prey to their vicious tactics? Mean Girls runs September 20-25, 2022.

About the Altria Theater

Located just west of downtown Richmond, right across from historic Monroe Park, the Altria Theater is the crown jewel in the city's performing arts complex. The 3,565-seat venue opened in 1927 as an "entertainment palace" and meeting place for the Shriners fraternal organization.

Originally known as the Mosque, the theater was designed in Moorish Revival style, featuring dramatic minarets and desert murals. The City of Richmond purchased the Mosque in 1940, conducting a complete renovation in the mid-1990s.

In addition to Broadway productions, the Altria hosts a wide range of popular events, from concerts and comedy shows to lectures and school commencement ceremonies. Celebrities who have performed at the renowned venue include Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, and Bruce Springsteen.

Whether it's live theater, movies, or museums, Richmond's cultural scene offers something for everyone. Contact us at Napier ERA to learn more about the attractions and amenities found around Richmond.
